# Configure data collection

To configure the agent to collect data from the edge host and send it to an AxoRouter instance, you must have:

  * a [Collection rule](../../../docs/axoflow/data-sources/collection-rules/index.md) with an Edge Selector that matches this host, and
  * a [Data forwarding rule](../../../docs/axoflow/data-sources/data-forwarding/index.md) with an Edge Selector that matches this host.



The edge selectors of these rules are high-level policies that use dynamic host labels to determine which edge hosts match the rule.

To configure data collection on the edge host, complete the following steps.

  1. Create a [new Collection rule](../../../docs/axoflow/data-sources/collection-rules/index.md#create) (select **Sources > Collection Rules > Add Rule**), or add the host to an [existing rule](../../../docs/axoflow/data-sources/collection-rules/index.md#add).
  2. Create a new [Data Forwarding rule](../../../docs/axoflow/data-sources/data-forwarding/index.md#create) (select **Sources > Forwarding Rules > Add Rule**), or add the host to an [existing rule](../../../docs/axoflow/data-sources/data-forwarding/index.md#add).
